2022 BOM | Medallion Quilt

Project Overview – A message from Tricialyn….

The 2022 BOM is focused on building a medallion quilt and led this year by Tricialyn.

Start with a center block of your choosing

I recommend using an orphan block as your center medallion. You can make one of course, but if you have a big pile of test blocks and leftovers like I do, this is a good time to go through them and see if you have something you’d like to design a quilt around. Keep in mind that your entire quilt will be built around the center block so you may need to add sashing to make it a size that can easily be added onto. For example: if the block you choose is 10.25” square, and the first theme is flying geese, you may find it difficult to just add flying geese. Embrace the challenge and know that you can find a way to make it work.

Build up your borders

I will assign 6 border themes throughout the year. You will use these to design the borders that will be applied around your center block, building the medallion. These themes are guidelines which you may interpret however you choose.  You may also add more than 6 borders.  It is all part of your design journey with this project.

Build up your skills

This is a year-long project that involves both design and quilt math, but don’t let that intimidate you. You are not alone on this journey.  I am here to help you if you feel stuck.

Join us at our monthly design meeting on the 1st Tuesday of each month or email me at any time. I want this quilt to be what you want it to be.
